Cook rice according to package directions. For best results, rinse the rice first and use a 1:2 ratio of rice to water.
While rice cooks, drain and rinse the black beans.
Heat a small saucepan over medium heat. Add beans with minced garlic, salt, and a splash of water.
Cook 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the beans are heated through and the garlic is fragrant. Lightly mash a few beans against the side of the pot — this thickens the mixture.
Taste and adjust salt.
Serve beans over rice. Top with a drizzle of soy sauce if desired.
Optional toppings: sliced avocado, hot sauce, lime juice, or shredded cheese.
